Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art through her aunt Denise as a young child. She worked as a night nurse so that she could give her aunt the time she needed during the day to indulge in the arts, literature and theater. DuVernay used the time she spent there to inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with diplomas in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was in the college. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was asked to look over the rubbish in the house of a member of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio just after she had graduated from college. In 1999, she launched her own business of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
